Tessa is co-founder and Chief Innovations Officer at AlgiKnit, a biomaterials company integrating science and design into textile production. She is one of the five finalists of Postcode Lottery Green Challenge 2018. With a background in textiles, Tessa aims to solve the problems created by the fashion industry through sustainable design.

The concept for AlgiKnit started when Tessa began to research the latest developments in biomaterials. She found out that most of these biotextile innovations come in sheets. She felt that creating a yarn that could be knitted was a better option, as knitting allows for zero waste manufacturing. Tessa and her team joined forces with a team of researchers from Columbia University to develop chemical processes and compositions that would produce the biopolymers from kelp that could be extruded in yarn form for knitting. The result was AlgiKnit. The start-up won multiple prizes and was accepted into several accelerator programmes.

Tessa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.
