Sandra Rey from France is one of the five finalists of the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge 2017. After watching a documentary about bioluminescence, she had a vision of a world lit by an inexhaustible, living and eco-friendly light source. After a law was passed in France that forbids retailers to light their shop windows between 1:00 am and 7:00 am to limit light pollution and energy consumption, Sandra was inspired and co-founded Glowee.

This Paris-based startup is developing bacteria-based lighting that uses a bioluminescent glow to light up urban landscape applications like buildings, furniture, festive lights and outdoor communication. Of all of the electricity consumed worldwide every year, approximately 19% is used by lighting systems in office buildings, factories, as street lighting, etc. Her goal is to disrupt the way we produce and consume light, by offering a living and self-sufficient lighting system that requires no installation infrastructures. Sandra holds a degree in Industrial Design.
