Planet Earth offers roughly 6 billion “usable” hectares, soil where plants and trees can grow in order to provide food and shelter for our ecosystem. Two billion of those hectares have been seriously degraded to accommodate our less than desirable lifestyle. Causes can be found in deforestation, urbanization and the effects of climate change. Wetlands account for half of those degraded hectares; the remaining one billion hectares are the playground for Jurriaan Ruys’s Land Life Company.

Land Life Company believes it is possible and necessary to restore our planet within our lifetime. The company developed the COCOON, a biodegradable incubator that is designed to support a seedling through its critical first years. The COCOON planting technology offers a low-cost, sustainable and scalable solution to plant trees in arid soils.

The product provides water and shelter while stimulating the seedling to produce a healthy and deep root, tapping into the sub-surface water supply. It enables the sapling to survive in extremely arid climates and as such, aid in reforestation efforts by eliminating irrigation and maintenance. Trees have been planted with the COCOON in more than 20 countries with survival rates of 80-95%.
