Companies are developing prototype 'smart meters' that do more than measure a home's energy use: they draw consumers' attention to how it can be reduced. Some display energy consumption in monetary terms in a prominent place in the house. Others let users monitor online where energy is being consumed in their homes.

This car-sharing service's 'subscribers' pay to borrow a vehicle on an occasional basis. The scheme encourages occasional auto use and cuts down on the number of cars on the road.

Voltaic solar bags

These bags and backpacks feature solar panels for recharging small electronic devices. Adapters are included, and a battery stores unused power for later. It's a convenient accessory that reduces polluting energy use.
