"PeelPioneers is a start-up that has developed a biorefinery concept that turns citrus waste into value-added resources. PeelPioneers focusses on North-West Europe based feedstock and value chains, starting its operation in the Netherlands. Citrus peel waste is currently incinerated or fermented while it still contains high-value components that are lost forever if processed this way.

In the Netherlands currently 250 million kilos of citrus peel is wasted every year (5500 in Europe) making it a massive squandering of resources from industrial juicing companies, supermarkets and restaurants. PeelPioneers turns the citrus peel into essential oils (fragrance), cellulosic fibre (packaging) and pectin (food ingredient). Currently PeelPioneers consists of six people and we're located in Prodock - a start-up hub for industrial startups - in the Port of Amsterdam where we did a commercial pilot in March and April.

The port of Amsterdam will most likely be the place where we will construct our first commercial plant that should be operational early 2018. As a team we're aspiring to become the 'Schillenboer' of the 21st century and making the Netherlands and finally Europe more circular and more biobased."
