SCOT FRANK, 2010 WINNER: SOLSOURCE
Plan: A portable, affordable solar device that can be used to cook, heat and generate power.
Biography: Frank’s (1985) background includes founding three start-ups, working as a computer scientist in IBM’s India Research Lab, and managing the renewable energy portfolio for the Clinton Global Initiative University. Frank received his bachelor’s degree from MIT where he majored in electrical engineering and computer science and minored in applied international studies. During his time at MIT, he worked for a computer company in China and made his first visit to the Himalayan region. Since 2005, Frank has taught design courses, led project teams, and built partnerships in the region. In 2007, he co-founded One Earth Designs as an entrepreneurial venture aimed at helping Himalayan communities by promoting environmental health and incubating innovation and entrepreneurship. As the current CEO of One Earth Designs, Frank is responsible for initiating and maintaining relations with government, other NGOs, and universities. In addition, he presides over board meetings along with the chairman and approves program strategies developed by the COO.
