GUNAWAN KUSUMA, 2010 FINALIST: FOLDIT
Plan: A foldable maritime container, which takes up a quarter of the space of a conventional container.
Biography: Gunawan Kusuma (1981) is the CEO of Holland Container Innovations (HCI). HCI is a start up company from Delft University of Technology who is developing foldable containers for land and sea transport.
Kusuma is the co-inventor of core technology that is used in HCI foldable containers, namely Heavy weight balancing mechanism. With his vision and leadership, cooperation with a major special container manufacturer is formed. Additionally, in cooperation with a major shipping line, a pilot project has been arranged. After successful pilot project, direct order is expected from the participating shipping line.
Kusuma received a dual degree for his B.Sc. with Cum-Laude in Product design and Mechanical Engineering from Utrecht University (The Netherlands) and PETRA University (Indonesia). Kusuma, then, received scholarship for his master degree in Advanced Mechatronics at Delft University of Technology. By the end of his master year, Kusuma was offered a PhD position in the same faculty. However, Kusuma’s passion for business drove him to put an end on his PhD after 1 year and started Holland Container Innovations, where he can channel his passion, creativity and leadership potential to the fullest.
Kusuma believes that HCI foldable container will start a revolution in the container industry to be more efficient and sustainable by providing significant economic saving and environmental benefits.
